The college admissions process consists of four main steps.
Step 1: The College List
Before you apply, you have to decide where out of the over 4,200 colleges and universities in the United States, which 8-12 will end up on the final list of colleges you will ultimately apply to. This is a longer process than most realize and generally takes five hours of time working with our college counselors to finalize.
Step 2: Essays
We work with students to create memorable essays that will help them be incredibly competitive within the application pool. On average, the students we work with write 30 essays, but can be more or less, depending on how the list of schools turns out. The essay process is the longest part of the application process and ideally, we would like six months just to work on essays with a student.
Step 3: Applications
The application portion of the admissions process may include the Common App, Coalition App, or a number of other applications which vary depending on the university. Applications also include all the pieces involved in applying for college, like transcripts, letters of recommendation, activity lists, and more.
Step 4: Financial Aid/Paying for College
Strategy. You can make college affordable, but you have to plan ahead! We will fill out the FAFSA or CSS Profile for you and work with the entire family to ensure all financial documents are done correctly, you know what you are signing, and create a strategy to make college as affordable as possible. You don’t want to be surprised with a bill down the road or come out with huge, unnecessary student loans. It’s all about the strategy!
